What is a Vacuum Excavator?

The uses of vacuum excavators have evolved over the years to the point where they are now very useful for a wide variety of tasks. Most of us are quite familiar with their more common use; that being the use of the backhoe to clear away rubble in construction sites. Nowadays excavators can do much more than simply clear away the ground. Some of the other more modern uses include the following.

Mobile engineering equipment: These are often referred to as vacuum excavators and are generally used for a wide variety of engineering jobs. For example they may be used to clear away an area where access has to be made for pedestrians or machinery, such as on a construction site where there is a need to create a path for moving materials and supplies. On larger projects they are used to clear an old mining area that needs to be demolished. Usually these trucks have a long articulated arm along with a large bucket located above the main body. Another very popular use is to dig through the ground for any buried pipes or cables. On larger projects these trucks have an access ramp that leads directly to the main body of the truck. Positive displacement blowers: These vacuum excavators come in the form of a three-stage positive displacement blower that uses a fan system to move the dirt. The first stage of the system moves the air through a blower rotor which is then guided by a hydraulic motor to the application area. Air is then drawn into the vacuum excavator chamber from the fan housing and pushed back through a hose to the blower rotor. The third and final stage removes the dirt by means of a vacuum cleaner nozzle.

Water jet lance units: These types of vacuum excavation units use a pressurized tank of water for moving material through a very large tube. It is often called a water jet lance because it resembles a large water needle. This is a very effective method for hydro excavating as it allows for complete coverage of a large area in a very short period of time. The water jet lance unit also has the added benefit of being able to perform in a smaller area than most of the other options available.

A key advantage to these types of excavators show in this guide is that they allow the operator to perform more delicate tasks. This would not be possible if the operator was using a standard truck or a dump truck. These excavators are also known as pressure hoe excavators. They have a wide variety of different attachments including a tiller, which is used to level land. This piece of equipment also has hydro blast capabilities in addition to the tiller.

A vacuum excavation truck is actually much more powerful than what people think. When you consider the fact that these trucks can move dirt over 50 feet and are often considered the workhorse of the construction industry, you start to see just how powerful this machine really is. In most cases, a vacuum excavator is considered to be more powerful than two dump trucks. This is one of the reasons why many people choose to hire a vacuum company when they are building a new home, or doing some renovations around the home. By hiring a trained operator, it can make the entire project go much faster and easier than it would if the work was being done by someone without a lot of experience.
